7 Things and 43 Other Things
Seven things that people don't really know about me
1. I always claim to hate my middle name, but I don't. As a matter of fact, if I could figure out a way to ditch the nickname that everyone currently calls me, I would swap it out for my middle name. As it is, I've been called Lynn since 5th grade and my parents still call me by my first name (No, I won't tell you what it is...) My middle name is a boy's name. To be specific, my grandfather's name, and his grandfather's name and his, etc etc until you get back to my first ancestor in the states' surname. He was lynched in Jamaica for being a religious zealot and his sister (who survived by marrying a ship's captain) named her son after her idiot brother. It also happens to be my least favorite cousin's first name and my second least favorite cousin's middle name. However, I think it would be cool to be called Chandler, and I do like it. (Lynn is the second half of my first name, which is one of those annoyingly southern compound names like Betty-Rae, Nina-Fay, and Nancy-Hope. Yes, I really know all those people. No, I won't tell you what the first half of my stupid compound name is.)
2. I am naturally left-handed, but was aversion-trained into being right-handed in kindergarten. As such, I have a really, really hard time with rights and lefts. For years, the only way I could tell right from left is that I have a freckle on my left index finger. After a bad sunburn in college, the freckle went away. Now, in order to clue my brain in, I only wear jewelry on my left hand. I partially reverted to left-handedness after breaking my right arm in a traffic accident and being in a cast for 3 months. I use a mouse left-handed and actually cannot function with a right-handed mouse. (My daughter is left-handed, and so is my husband. I am prepared to KILL anyone who tries to aversion-train Darcy into being right-handed.)
3. I never remember the date of my dad's birthday. I always have to call my mother and ask her. My parents have been divorced for 16 years. My mother always remembers.
4. I hate the feeling of water on my face. Whether it's in the shower, being splashed in a pool, being squirted with a water-gun, or whatever. I can manage it in certain situations where I'm in complete control of the water (such as swimming underwater, although I always want to dry my face off the INSTANT I come up for air) but I'm not the kind of person who can wash my face by cupping water in my hands. It just completely freaks me out. I have no idea why.
5. The first boy I ever kissed was Johnny Rayburn. I was thirteen and we ended up kissing under a pine tree across the street from my house, halfway down the hill. I remember the smell of pine needles and the look of his face in the moonlight. The first girl I ever kissed was Jonni Reynolds. We kissed near a cedar tree, walking back from seeing Thelma and Louis. Something about the symetry there pleases me.
6. Three people in my life have written me poetry. The first was my high school sweetheart, whose poetry was sincere, and sincerely awful... reminiscent of New Kids on the Block lyrics without the catchy backbeat... the third was a girl I loved very much in college, but was possessive, paranoid, and a man-hater, to the point where she didn't like me to have guy friends... the second one, however, touched me the most. I barely knew the guy. His name was Nathan Burbank and he was in one of my Gifted classes with me, despite being two years my senior. Nice guy, kinda quiet. Kinda cute in a - what would later be called - "emo" sort of way. Moody. That he harbored anything for me, I never knew until after he died. His sister Rhonda brought me a packet of letters about a month after he died from a drug-overdose... it was a collection of poetry and sketches he'd done, of and about, me. I still have them.
7. I have a thing about death. I've known entirely too many people who've died, and I don't like - and won't attend - funerals. While I understand the purpose of a funeral and accept that they are helpful to other people, I can't... what ends up happening to me at a funeral is that the emotions are so strong that I can't let go. I end up remembering the funeral much more clearly than I remember the person who died. I know it's supposed to be a show of respect to attend, and I further know and understand that I have massively offended several living relations and not less than a few friends by refusing to attend funerals, but I cannot bring myself to do it again. I'd much rather remember Richard stealing pennies from me while we're playing penny-ante poker, or my grandfather complaining about the rabbits in his garden than everyone crying and trying to "be strong" and long eulogies delivered by people I don't like, misrepresenting the lives of people I did... Sorry. Funerals suck. And I won't go. Ever. Again. This is horrifically compounded by the fact that I have an absolute screaming phobia about dead things. And unfortuantely, once a person crosses into the land of "dead thing" for me, I just... yergh. It's bad, and I won't do that to myself or to anyone I love.
So, those are my 7 things that most people don't know... I'm also working on another list... 43 things I'd like to do before I die... but I sort of ran out of time today, so I didn't get to that. Maybe tomorrow. I expect that'll take me more than an hour or so to write, anyway...
As with all memes, I'm supposed to tag other people for it, but... pfft. If you want to do this, do it, and if not, don't feel obligated. You can let me know in the comments and I'll go look at your list...

2008, a Year in Review
Was 2008 good for you?
Mostly, yes. As usual, money keeps coming up as an issue, but I don't see that as ever stopping. If I have more money, I'll just spend more money. But I lost 65 pounds, I gained several good, healthy habits. I learned more about how to budget my time and money. I have learned how to make and keep lists, and I've learned more about how to keep up with my housework.
What was your favorite moment of the year?
Being fussed over at the Express while getting my dress for Thomas's office party.
What was your worst moment of the year?
Strangely enough, I don't think I really had a worst moment this year. Nothing leaps to mind, at any rate. We had the usual money woes, but managed to get through another year without having to hit anyone up for a loan. There were some illnesses in friends and family members, but everyone's gotten better or gotten adjusted. I didn't even quit a guild this year!
Where were you when 2008 began?
Chesapeake, Virginia
Who were you with?
My husband and my daughter, and two completely annoying felines.
Where will you be when 2008 ends?
Chesapeake, Virginia
Did you keep your new years resolution of 2008?
Shockingly enough, yes. I resolved to start eating better and start some sort of exercise program. Both of these things I have managed to keep doing for the year. I also resolved to attempt to keep a better grip on my housework, which I have done (thanks Flylady!). I've lost 65 pounds this year, I walk at least 10 miles every week. I also finished up my resolution from 2006, when I decided to get all my dental work done. Wow, that one took a while to accomplish.
Do you have a new years resolution for 2009?
Like with my 2006 resolution of getting my teeth fixed, the 'getting healthy' resolution is a work in progress. I still have a little less than 30 pounds to go to finish up my weight loss. I'd like to start and work on writing my half of the book that Thomas and I have in the works. I don't have any specific plans or anything, yet, this year. I frequently don't really nail down resolutions on Jan 1. Sometimes they show up before the year's end, and sometimes they don't show up until March... just depends. I don't think there's really a target date for setting goals... even if Jan 1 is convenient.
Did you fall in love in 2008? If yes, with who?
Yes. With my husband. I never fell out of love with him, mind, but sometimes it seems a little less urgent than it used to, you know? And as much as I do love him, I occasionally take him for granted, or dismiss him from consideration. I'd gotten particularly used to thinking of him as a slug; someone who didn't do much of anything unless he was forced to... I've been constantly, and continually, impressed with him this year. Not to mention the fact that he's LOADS better looking than he used to be. Which is always nice.
Are you still in love?
Abso-fraggin'-lutely.
Did you breakup with anyone in 2008?
Nope.
Did you make any new friends in 2008?
Yes. Leslie and Tommy P. Ashley. Beth. My Evil Twin! Loads and loads of online friends.
Who are your favorite new friends?
Leslie!! And Beth!
What was your favorite month of 2008? Why this month?
February was good. Thomas and I had our 10th year anniversary and enjoyed some vacation time. June was good, too.
Did you travel outside of the US (or your home country) in 2008?
Nope.
How many different places did you travel to in 2008?
We went to North Carolina twice...
Did you miss anybody in the past year?
I wouldn't mind seeing Ashby again... he's a wretched corespondent.
What was your favorite movie that you saw in 2008?
Kung Fu Panda!
What was your favorite song from 2008?
I Kissed a Girl, Katy Perry
How many concerts or plays did you see in 2008?
Zero
What was your favorite book in 2008?
Guess it was Twilight... didn't really read much of anything new this year...
How many people did you sleep with in 2008?
Just my husband... but I slept with him A LOT.
Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
Aside from a fudge binge, no, not really...
What was the biggest lie you told in 2008?
Told my dad that I'd been planning to take him to dinner for his 60th birthday, but honestly, I'd forgotten it was his 60th birthday until after the fact. Fortunately, because he didn't come down to drop off the child, as had been planned, instead he foisted it off on his sister-in-law to bring the child back to us, I was able to act all indignant and stuff.
Did you treat somebody badly in 2008?
Probably. No one's come to me with an Issue though, so I remain blissfully ignorant.
Did somebody treat you badly in 2008?
From time to time, but not enough so for me to have a little Sit Down with them to discuss it.
What was your proudest moment of 2008?
You know, I'd love to have one of these... but I spend entirely too much time belittling my own accomplishments for much pride. I can think of some moments that I should be proud of, that I want to be proud of... and yet, I don't seem to harbor much glow of satisfaction over them. God, I'm
What was your most embarrassing moment of 2008?
I don't think I had one... altho maybe I'm just repressing it, but I can't remember doing anything particularly humiliating in public...
If you could go back to any moment of 2008 and change something, what would it be?
Never. happen. I never want to change anything. Even when I want to, I don't. What happened, no matter how upsetting or ridiculous it was, makes me the person I am today, and you just never know how changing one thing will mess up too many other things. I am reasonably content with my life. I don't want it to be different.
Where did you work in 2008?
I am happy and content in my well-paying job. Housewife. I never leave the house.
Favorite TV shows(s) of 2008?
Heroes, Season 1
Favorite Band(s) of 2008?
P!nk
Favorite Food in 2008?
Does chewing gum count? If so, Trident lime-strawberry splash.
Favorite Drink in 2008?
Diet Coke with Lime
Favorite Place in 2008?
Outer Banks, NC
Favorite person(s) to be with in 2008?
my husband
my daughter
Leslie
Favorite person(s) to talk to in 2008?
My Evil Twin, Val
Favorite trip in 2008?
Day trip to OBX with Jeanne and Leigh and spouse and child.
Favorite stores in 2008?
Express
Hardest thing you had to go through in 2008?
My clothes. Over and over again, tossing stuff that doesn't fit. Speaking of which, it's time to purge the XL shirts...
Most exciting moment(s) in 2008?
Fitting into a size 12 jeans for the first time since 1991
Funniest moment(s) in 2008?
Conversation with Child:
Darcy: Mommy, why are you buying new clothes?
Me: Nothing fits anymore because I lost some weight...
Darcy: ::patting my arm with great sympathy:: Don't worry, Mommy, we'll find your weight for you!
Year in Review
A bit before the beginning of 2008, my husband and I decide to go on a diet.
January, we find out my best friend's daughter is diabetic, and I deal with embracing my own problems.
In February, I joined the Healthy You Challenge, went on a long weekend trip to OBX, and started the long term project of working on my attitude.
March came along, and I abandoned the Flex plan for Core, had some personal issues with friends, and had a bra intervention.
In April, my husband had his birthday party, I dropped below 200 pounds, got to my 10% weight loss goal, and went for my first run.
May came along and I spent a while being sick... I also discussed our household philosophy, and learn to make better bad choices.
June was a fun month... we went to OBX with some friends, and I went off the reservation. I rant about my lack of feminity and trouble finding "small rewards" for my weight loss (and my husband makes theoretical physics discussions about his male bits...)
In July, my weight got down to nearly forgotten territories, as I hit my second 10% goal. (At 178, I had, by this point, dropped nearly 40 pounds!) I ended up getting new bras again, and had a great moment when I realized I was no longer compensating for being overweight.
In August, I talk philosophy and lose 45 pounds. I show off my massively overdeveloped (altho, similarly massively underused) brain, and get taken off the asthma medications that I had been taking for better than 10 years.
With September and the beginning of Fall, I fell off the BMI-Obese charts. I talk about my problems with my self-image in a post replete with Star Wars imagry... I do the Math on Weight Watchers and I discuss the many different kinds of good weather.
October sees my daughter's birthday, me into a size 12, a great side by side comparison picture and my guest post over at MizFit, which was so totally cool I can't begin to explain it!
November, in which we descend into the depths of the "holiday season", my first real plateau, in which I spend the better part of six weeks playing with the same 5 pounds... I discuss what I'm grateful for, and I make Some Plans.
And finally, December, the end of a long, strange trip... I had a good Thanksgiving, a great shopping experience, and Weight Watchers updates its Plans...

Meme, You You
(With added spellchecking and taking things out of stupid all caps, because, you know, Capslock is NOT cruise control for cool)
1) Last movie you saw in the theater? Kung Fu Panda. Twice. Also, I've seen Iron Man, Prince Caspian, Nim's Island, Indiana Jones 4. I plan to see The Incredible Hulk and Get Smart in the next few weeks.
2) What Book are you reading? Um... The Idiot Proof Diet, The Fire Sea by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman and The Secret Diary of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn. Yes, I read too much.
3) Favorite board game? I don't think I really have one, altho I loathe parchizzi. I'm generally willing to play any sort of board game you put in front of me. Kinda like Risk.
4) Favorite magazine? Um. None? I can't remember the last time I read a magazine. I'd rather count cracks in the ceiling. I always bring a book to doctor's appointments and whatnot.
5) Favorite smells? NOT burning peat bog. Freshly laundered sheets. Sandalwood. Jasmine.
6) Favorite sounds? I'd say silence, but I don't know what that is. I have tinnitus, and I'm always hearing something ringing in my ears, 24 hours a day. Every day. All day long. For as long as I can remember. Anything that blocks that out (fan running, static, music in the background, whatnot) is a favorite sound.
7) Worst feeling in the world? stepping barefooted on a slug
8 ) What is the first thing you think when you get up in the morning? Where are my glasses?
9) Favorite fast food place? Paneras
10) Future child's name? I don't think I'll have any more children... if I did, however, I'm fond of the names Stephanie and Graham
11) Finish this statement: If I had a lot of money, I would… probably pay a lot of taxes. And generally be freaked out. And probably worry which one of my stupid relations was going to ask for a loan. I do not, actually, want a lot of money. I don't think I'd handle it very well.
12) Do you drive fast? Hell no. I don't drive at all if I can possibly manage to avoid it.
13) Do you sleep with a stuffed animal? I am not allowed, anymore. My husband doesn't want any stuffies on the bed. I do have a bunch, still.
14) Storms; cool or scary? No. Wet, and annoying.
15) What was your first car? A 1985 Buick LeSabre Limited; code name La Behemoth.
16) Favorite drink? Diet Coke with lime
17) Finish this sentence: If I had the time I would… I have the time. What is it you'd like to add to my list of things to do?
18 ) Do you eat the stems on broccoli? Yep. Ever hear of broccoli slaw? Good stuff.
19) If you could dye your hair, what color would it be? my hair is dyed.
20) Name all the different cities where you have lived? Lousia (otherwise known as Hell), Williamsburg, Lynchburg (only slightly less like Hell), Hampton, Newport News, and Chesapeake. All in Virginia.
21) Favorite sport to watch? No.
22) One nice thing about the person who tagged you for this? WVSooner is a really nice guy. Even though he's going through the sort of personal tragedy that would make me a raging maniac or a depressing crybaby, he still finds the time to be nice and supportive to other people.
23) What's under your bed? the cats, usually.
24) Would you like to be born as yourself again? Do I have to remember it from the first time? then no. If I get to start out clean slate, with no memories, then sure. I won't notice anyway.
25) Morning person or night owl? Neither, really. I like the period of time between about 11am to 3pm ish.
26) Over Easy or Sunny Side up? YUCK. I don't like fried eggs. Poached, scrambled, or omelets, thanks.
27) Favorite place to relax? What is this relax, of which you speak?
28 ) Favorite pie? Buttermilk chess
29) Favorite ice cream flavor? mint chocolate chip, hands down
30) Of all the people you have tagged (annoyed) who will respond first? I'm not tagging anyone, but if you want to fill this out, feel free ;0)

Memes and Awards and Friends, Oh My!
The idea is to write six words that sum up your life. You have no idea how... I don't want to say I hate this sort of thing, because that's not entirely true. I just have a lot of trouble taking it seriously.
The first thing that came to mind was:
I really hate stuff like this.
I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I'm manic-depressive (with Situational Anxiety). Mostly what that means is that I have severe reactions to ordinary things. A little worrying can get out of hand and become an obsession. While that might seem like a complete aside, it's not. When I start into a downslope, one of the ways I can tell is that I count rhythm of my words on my fingers. I get obsessed with hitting the 5 beat at the end of a sentence (syllables, usually). Which makes the way I talk come out a little oddly as I start editing when I get near the end of what I want to say to add more syllables in. After I got tagged for this little meme, I spent all day thinking in sentences of six words.
Pithy quotations cannot summarize a life.
I really did spent most of the day thinking about it. I had lots of think-time yesterday. I got a bee in my bonnet about the porch, so I went out there and started cleaning. I moved all the lawn furniture out onto the grass (and Darcy's plastic outdoor toys and let her play on her slide) and then swept out four years worth of leaves and dust from the corners. (My across-the-street neighbor came out to watch me. He didn't wave, but sat out on his balcony for the entire time I was out there. It was mildly creepy.) I windexed the porch doors, and cleaned off the lighting fixture and washed off some of the worst dirt stains on the siding. Our old neighbors, Jess and Duane, spilled a beer or three down our siding on a few occasions, so there are some weird stains. I polished off all of Darcy's toys and reorganized how things sat there. And while I was out there, I washed all the exterior windows.
These are all mindless sort of tasks, so I had lots of time to think about this entry.
You have got to be kidding.
I understand the theory of the meme, which is to try to boil down all the crap in your life into a few meaningful words. I'm just slightly dubious about the value of doing so... I mean, reduction sauce is a wonderful, flavorful thing to do to a chicken dish. But it's a criminal thing to do to coffee.
Sarcasm is a lost art form.
On the other hand, I'm still a relatively new member to the diet-blogging community, and I'd hate to get thrown out just because I can't get my inner snark under control. So... seriously. Deep breath. Attempt to focus.... what do I think sums up my life?
With focus, anything can be achieved.
I'm good at goals. I really am. Once I decide I want something badly enough, I usually get it. And by something, I don't mean a physical thing. I mean, something for myself. A change of self. I quit smoking ten years ago. By deciding that that's what I wanted to do. I put the cigarette down, and I haven't picked one up since. I've quit on bad boyfriends, reshaped my relationship with my father, written a novel, and made my peace with an old trauma on the same determination.
My problem is... getting focused in the first place.
So, secondly...I got awarded a "Nice Matters" blog award from V at The Diet Book. I was really pleased and flattered by the things she said about me. I'm constantly gobsmacked when people say that I'm "inspiring." I always thought I was one of those people your mother warned you about.
(I'm still trying to get over my own personal demon about the word nice. I use it to describe one of my ex-boyfriends. Grant was... nice. Sweet, even. But he was also... not the guy for me. I continued to date him for about 2 years after I figured that out because he was so NICE that I didn't want to hurt him.)
That being said, I'd like to give this award out to a few other people....
Beth, at Tea and Thee, who was one of the first people who started commenting on my blog and who gives wonderful money-saving advice as well having diet woes and stories from the trenches, and two absolutely adorable kids!
Looking Great at Weight Watching, who is another stay-at-home mom, and helped me make up my mind to do Core just by being a great influence. She also shared with me the wonderful recipe for baked oatmeal, which has become a Core staple around here!
And Carolyn at Quest, who is funny and smart and goes to the gym which is something I've not been brave enough to try yet. You go, girlfriend!
Also, Cindy at Go Workout Mom, who I love reading. Her Goal Call Mondays have been a major motivating factor in my life for the last six weeks or so (Alas, I have not yet WON a prize... but I will!) She writes a kick-butt e-mail thread, too, which I highly recommend signing up for, if you haven't already. I must admit, I'm still puzzling over her name. It is "Go Workout Mom" like a cheer "Go Speedracer!" or is it an imperative "Go Workout Mom!" like "Go Make your Bed!" In either case, it's good advice!
Obviously, there are lots of other people who I'd love to give this to, but I think 90% of them have one already! Nice matters, and everyone knows it! (and them!)
